Canine Psychology & Behaviour

Learn to understand your dog.

Learn to understand your dog

Dogs communicate constantly through their body language, facial expressions, vocalizations, posture, and movements. Yet many of these signals are misunderstood, leaving owners unsure of what their dogs are feeling, communicating, or trying to express.

Canine Psychology & Behaviour is a foundational educational course designed to help you better understand how dogs communicate, interpret their surroundings, and respond to the world around them.

Through visual demonstrations, audio examples, real-world scenarios, and interactive learning, you'll explore the science behind canine behaviour and learn to recognize signals that are often overlooked or misinterpreted.

What You'll Learn

Canine Body Language
Learn to recognize and interpret common canine signals, including ear position, tail movement, facial expressions, posture, weight distribution, and overall body tension. Understand why individual signals should be interpreted in context rather than viewed in isolation.

Understanding Canine Communication
Explore how dogs communicate through body language, vocalizations, movement, and distance. Visual and audio examples will help you recognize signals such as growling, whining, barking, lip licking, yawning, and other behaviors that can provide insight into a dog's emotional state.

Common Myths & Misconceptions
Challenge widely repeated assumptions about dog behavior. Learn why a wagging tail doesn't automatically mean a dog is happy, why yawning can actually signal stress or excitement, and why direct eye contact from an unfamiliar person may be perceived as threatening by a dog.

Recognizing Stress, Fear & Discomfort
Learn to identify signs that a dog may be uncomfortable, overwhelmed, fearful, or attempting to create distance. Understand how subtle warning signals can escalate when a dog's discomfort goes unrecognized, and why respecting those signals is essential to safe interactions.

Normal Behaviour vs. Potential Warning Signs
Explore the difference between common canine behaviors and changes that may warrant further investigation. Learn to recognize potential indicators of pain, illness, sensory changes, or other health concerns, including sudden behavioral changes, unusual vocalization, disorientation, and persistent repetitive behaviors.

Understanding Behaviour in Context
Discover how environment, past experiences, genetics, development, and individual temperament can influence a dog's responses. Learn why the same behavior may have different explanations in different situations, and why observing the circumstances surrounding a behavior matters just as much as observing the behavior itself.

Learn to Recognize What Others Miss

This course goes beyond written explanations. Visual demonstrations and audio examples will allow you to observe canine signals and practice interpreting what you see and hear.

Rather than memorizing a list of behaviors, you'll learn to consider the complete picture: the dog's posture, facial expression, movement, vocalization, environment, and the events surrounding the interaction.

Test Your Understanding

At the end of the course, you'll complete a knowledge assessment designed to evaluate your understanding of canine communication, body language, behavioral myths, and potential warning signs.

The assessment helps reinforce what you've learned and identify areas you may want to revisit before moving forward with further training education.

Understanding comes before training.

The better you understand what your dog is communicating, the better equipped you'll be to respond appropriately, recognize discomfort, support their needs, and build a relationship grounded in trust and clear communication.
